About Gold Coast
The iconic city of the Gold Coast can be found in the Australian state of Queensland, sitting approximately 66 kilometres to the south of Brisbane, the state capital, and just north of the neighbouring state border of New South Wales.
With a reputation for glitz and glamour, it attracts tourists from all over the country and indeed the world, thanks to its sunny climate, distinctive high-rise skyline, fancy resorts, reputation for golden sand surf beaches, world-famous theme parks and close proximity to the impressive rainforest hinterlands, with waterfalls and walking trails.
As of June 2018, the Gold Coast was estimated to boast a population of more than 679,000, making it the sixth-largest city in Australia and the largest non-capital city in the country.
The area is the traditional home of a number of Indigenous clans of the Yugambeh people, which include the Bullongin, Kombumerri and Tulgi-gi-gin clans. European settlers arrived in the early 1820s when explorer John Oxley landed at Mermaid Beach. The red cedar supply of the local hinterlands attracted an increasing number of settlers to the area and, as the nearby town of Southport developed a reputation as the perfect holiday destination, the area continued to grow. Consequent, over-inflated real estate prices resulted in the nickname of the ‘Gold Coast’ from around 1950, with this soon becoming a popular ‘catch-all’ way to refer to the holiday strip that stretched from Southport to Coolangatta.
Today the city boasts a large television and film production industry, providing the backdrop for popular TV shows and blockbuster movies made by producers from all over the world. It also famously played host to the 2018 Commonwealth Games, cementing its reputation as a destination for major sporting events.
